Program Update

Book Fair

First Book Fair Held at 118th St Elementary School in Los Angeles

With the advent of the COVID pandemic, my concept of group gatherings for book clubs was no longer possible. I evolved my book program to a school Book Fair program. The inaugural event, held in October 2021 with third graders at 118th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, was a huge success.

Bessie Morris Foundation gave each of the participating children a copy of Unstoppable Me by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and Kristina Tracy. The children also received from A.C. Bilibrew Library goodie bags that contained books, bookmarkers, pencils, crayons, activities sheets, and an application for a student success card. Barnes & Noble of Manhattan Beach provided a discount card.

Bessie Morris Prom Dreams alumna (2014) Gloria Araya and I shared our respective stories which we hope help inspire the youngsters. Gloria read Unstoppable Me to the students (view presentation here), answered their questions and led group activities. The winners received Subway gift cards.

Thank you to Principal Grace Lee for being so innovative and open to ideas for the benefit of her students. Bessie Morris Foundation is especially appreciative for the ongoing support of Southern California NOBLE who has sponsored the 2021 Bessie Morris Foundation programs.

If this story inspires you to support the mission of Bessie Morris Foundation, please sign up for our email list and make a donation.
