Academic Scholarships Winners

 

The Bessie Morris Foundation is proud to announce our 2024 Academic Scholarship recipients. We are pleased to have identified ten scholars for both their excellence and need. We thank the Southern California Chapter of National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives for funding two through their generous Community Service Award Mom and Pop Reddick Scholarship.

Aurrie Parker 2024 Mom & Pop Reddick Scholarship recipient

Aurrie Parker

MOM & POP REDDICK SCHOLARSHIP
Aurrie Parker, a graduate of University Pathways Public Service Academy, will be attending Dillard University in the fall. Aurrie aims to become an orthopedic surgeon. Her high school experience working in an orthopedic clinic sparked her curiosity and dedication. Aurrie plans to major in Biology, Pre-Med, or Nursing, seeking exposure to new environments and challenges. This scholarship will support her ambition and commitment to a future in the medical field.

Tyree Littles 2024 Mom & Pop Reddick Scholarship recipient

Tyree Littles

MOM & POP REDDICK SCHOLARSHIP
Graduating from University Pathways Public Service Academy, Tyree Littles will be attending Huston-Tillotson University in the fall. His dedication to himself and his team has shown itself in his extracurricular's including karate and basketball. His many travels have enriched his life and inspired his desire to share these opportunities with others.

 
 

Briana Maldonado

Briana Maldonado is currently a second-year student at the University of California, San Diego, majoring in sociology with a concentration in law and society. She is petitioning to double major in political science and minor in ChicanX and LatinX studies. Her professional goal is to advocate for social justice and legal reform, closely tied to her personal mission of supporting marginalized communities. Despite the initial challenges of adjusting to college life, Briana has found her footing through joining a summer program and Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is committed to using her education to foster community and create lasting change.

Alana Matthews

Alana Matthews is an undergraduate student at George Washington University. Her professional goal is to become an international human rights lawyer, deeply tied to her personal mission of advocating for marginalized communities. Alana has embraced change and growth. A transformative trip to Italy further solidified her commitment to making a difference. With this scholarship, Alana is poised to continue her journey of resilience and service.

Maricela Rojas

After completeting her undergraduate at California State University, Dominguez Hills. She will be staying at Dominguez Hills and has been accepted into their Master's program in Social Work. Maricela has proven her resilience and determination. Despite discouraging words, she graduated from college and now aims to help her community by mentoring youth with resources and guidance. Proud to be a Latina and a former foster youth, Maricela is excited to continue her journey with the support of this scholarship.

 

Mitchell Thomas

Mitchell Thomas, a graduating senior from South Pasadena High School, will be attending California State University, Fullerton in the fall. Transitioning to high school, Mitchell faced academic challenges, balanced JV Basketball, and adapted to new social dynamics. Despite personal losses and changes at home, he remained resilient and committed. Supported by his mother, Mitchell learned the value of cherishing loved ones, resiliency, and family. His journey highlights his dedication and determination to succeed despite adversity.

Jonae McGee

Graduating from Eastside High School, Jonae McGee will be attending the University of California, Santa Barbara in the fall. Through self-reflection and the support of a special person, she learned the importance of facing reality and personal growth. This scholarship will provide the extra financial support needed to help her achieve her goals.

Kennedy Mitchell-Egbo

Kennedy Mitchell-Egbo

This student athlete is a graduate of St. Francis High School who was inspired by his grandmother to better his community. He participated in community cleanups, giveaways, and created care packages during the pandemic. Kennedy aims to uplift his community through educating fellow community members in legal literacy, new experiences, and fostering connections. He will be attending Bucknell University in the fall.

 

Karlan Arenas

Karlan is currently enrolled at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Despite the many obstacles Karlan has faced, her passion for advocating for marginalized communities, especially within Special Education, has driven her determination. Returning to academia at 30, Karlan excelled in community college and now continues to pursue her goal to create an inclusive and equitable educational environment.

Adela Ruiz

During her time at Alliance Cindy & Bill Simon Technology High School, Adela achieved a balance of academic excellence, participation in various clubs, and familial responsibilities, while also taking on a paid internship. She will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall.
